Over the weekend I had a conversation that brought up some memories for me.
I don't know why I am floored everytime I have this conversation with my oldest daughter...
but I am.
We had an outing over the weekend to purchase church shoes for my 9 years old...2 months shy of 10 year old daughter...and again I say...floored.
We popped into our local ROSS, which is insane on Saturdays....why do I always forget that?
Anyhow, as we made our way, bobbing and weaving the clothes on the floor, zipping past the people standing there flipping through stackes of dresses and finally over to the shelves stuffed with shoes...we ended up in front of the sign that read size 6.5. As we looked up and down the row I finally found a pair that was appropriate for a 9 year old and chucked them down towards her feet. Once I saw them on the floor next to her foot I had to laugh out loud at the thought of her getting her foot in that shoe....not gonna happen. Was I dreaming? Was I wishing?
Moving around the corner to the size 7 shoes....still, I think I was wishing she would remain small and let this size fit her.. It reminded me of Drizella trying to get that glass slipper on her foot.
Moving around to the 7.5 size, finally we found a pair that she could atleast get on...but with her heel at the end and her toes nearly at the front I couldn't feel good about paying 22.00 for a shoe that would only last another month.
Off to the
8's....dang!
As we talked about her age and her foot size and her being in 5th grade next year...my mind just reeled with memories from when I was in 5th grade. I got nervous for her and then I remember the year I went into the 5th grade and how we had just moved to a new town....which meant:
new school, new friends & new house.
At first I remember crying as we left my sweet friends behind in Enterprise Utah....but being young I suppose that made me slightly more capable of adjusting.
Fifth Grade was the last grade in elementary in Hurricane and it was different for me. I had Mr. Shumway as my teacher and we were in the trailer class out behind the school next to the playground. Our class was also right behind the cafeteria...so our classroom always smelt good around lunch time. Oh...I loved those darn lunchroom rolls. I remember helping out in the kitchen once in awhile so we could eat for free. It was good for me, although at the time I was a bit embarrassed to have to wear the hair nets.
Back to the class:
I remember sitting next to Robin Gubler, she was so nice to me. I thought I had made my new lifelong friend....but our likes set us apart. I wanted to play kickball, soccer, football whatever was on the field...Robin was into other things. I remember one day saying hi to her and felt bad afterwards...she had replaced me with someone else. We did end up friends in High School.....I really liked her.
I remember taking multiplication tests in this class as well as memorizing the presidents of the US...which I failed to do. Mr. Shumway made us memorize the Gettysburg address...which I only remember getting through the first paragraph and sitting down.
I remember being in 5th grade when we lost the space shuttle Columbia. I remember watching it on the tv in our classroom and seeing Mr Shumways expression told me it was a bad deal.
I remember another new thing for me was riding the bus to and from school. Mr. Reed or Mr. Hirshi were the drivers. Mr. Reed was mean...I thought. He would kick you off if you looked at him wrong. Now..looking back...he was a patient man and so kind. Except that time my brother touched the bus as it drove off in front of our home. Mr Reed exited the bus with full force and walked straight to the front door to speak to my mother. Luckily for my bro....my parents weren't home....however, having a dad that is the High School Principal....he could always be found!
I loved my 5th grade year!
I love remember things that might help me with my little girlies get through their 5th grade easier.
You think they'll listen? Probably like I did....n't!
